Facebook Inc. is an online social media and social networking service company based in Menlo Park, California. It provides products (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Oculus VR) that enable users to connect and communicate through mobile devices, PCs and other platforms.
Founded in 2004 as ‘The Facebook’ by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard College students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, the website was initially limited to Harvard students. It was later expanded to other higher education institutions in the Boston area, the Ivy League schools and Stanford University. Gradually, students from other colleges, universities and high schools were able to join the website. In 2006, Facebook expanded its registration to allow anyone to become a member. Its membership has since grown to more than 2.2 billion monthly active users.
Facebook Inc. shares are traded on the NASDAQ Stock Market. The company is also a component of the NASDAQ-100, S&P 100, and S&P 500 stock market indices.
