10th March 2014
Asian markets have broadly declined today (March 10th), following the release of weaker-than-anticipated trade data from China and ongoing concerns regarding the tensions in Ukraine.
According to the figures, exports from the country were down by 18 per cent year on year in February. However, there have been suggestions these numbers have been skewed because the Lunar New Year Holiday fell in February this year, whereas it took place in January in 2013.
The Shanghai Composite dropped by 2.9 per cent on the back of the data, closing below the 2,000 points threshold for the first time in six weeks. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng ended the session down by 1.75 per cent.
Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 index shed 1.01 per cent after a revision to Japan's gross domestic product report cut the country's fourth-quarter economic growth from one per cent to 0.7 per cent. The market closed at 15,120.14 points.
