India stocks higher at close of trade; Nifty 50 up 0.49%

Investing.com – India stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Metals and Public Sector Undertakings sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 rose 0.49% to hit a new all time high, while the BSE Sensex 30 index added 0.47%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Coal India Ltd (NS:COAL), which rose 3.58% or 15.75 points to trade at 455.60 at the close. Meanwhile, Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL) added 3.37% or 19.75 points to end at 605.50 and ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) was up 2.32% or 9.90 points to 436.25 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd (NS:HDFL), which fell 2.04% or 12.95 points to trade at 621.00 at the close. Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) declined 1.68% or 24.30 points to end at 1,426.00 and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (NS:MRTI) was down 1.65% or 213.00 points to 12,675.00.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) which rose 2.28% to 436.00, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (BO:KTKM) which was up 2.15% to settle at 1,820.60 and Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which gained 2.10% to close at 1,229.10.

The worst performers were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which was down 1.60% to 12,684.25 in late trade, HDFC Bank Ltd (BO:HDBK) which lost 0.88% to settle at 1,535.00 and Larsen&Toubro Ltd (BO:LART) which was down 0.73% to 3,756.90 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1088 to 1084 and 49 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1847 rose and 1834 declined, while 104 ended unchanged.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was down 2.18% to 11.11 a new 3-months low.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.18% or 4.25 to $2,366.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.22% or 0.19 to hit $85.42 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.23% or 0.21 to trade at $89.63 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.01% to 83.21, while EUR/INR rose 0.05% to 90.40.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 103.81.
