U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 2.11%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.11%, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.80%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.80%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 0.18% or 0.16 points to trade at 87.60 at the close. Meanwhile, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) fell 0.66% or 1.56 points to end at 233.19 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was down 0.70% or 1.26 points to 177.55 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 5.37% or 1.46 points to trade at 25.72 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 5.36% or 1.73 points to end at 30.52 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was down 5.09% or 12.55 points to 234.24.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which rose 7.28% to 102.14, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) which was up 2.24% to settle at 496.09 and Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) which gained 2.01% to close at 30.41.

The worst performers were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 13.87% to 58.44 in late trade, CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which lost 10.52% to settle at 88.21 and Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 8.56% to 154.24 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inventiva Sa (NASDAQ:IVA) which rose 69.47% to 7.05, Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which was up 61.35% to settle at 2.63 and Minim Inc (NASDAQ:MINM) which gained 50.94% to close at 0.32.

The worst performers were Avenue Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATXI) which was down 57.71% to 2.66 in late trade, InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which lost 49.25% to settle at 4.05 and Bone Biologics Corp (NASDAQ:BBLG) which was down 35.53% to 0.58 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2646 to 435 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 3069 fell and 645 advanced, while 200 ended unchanged.

Shares in Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) fell to 52-week lows; down 13.87% or 9.41 to 58.44. Shares in Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) fell to 52-week lows; falling 8.56% or 14.44 to 154.24. Shares in Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) fell to 5-year lows; losing 5.37% or 1.46 to 25.72. Shares in Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) fell to 5-year lows; down 5.36% or 1.73 to 30.52. Shares in Avenue Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATXI) fell to all time lows; losing 57.71% or 3.63 to 2.66. Shares in Bone Biologics Corp (NASDAQ:BBLG) fell to all time lows; down 35.53% or 0.32 to 0.58.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.75% to 31.36.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.06% or 18.20 to $1,702.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 4.93% or 4.36 to hit $92.81 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.91% or 3.69 to trade at $98.11 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.50% to 0.97, while USD/JPY rose 0.18% to 145.38.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.43% at 112.67.
