U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.49%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Technology and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.49% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.90%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.49%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 0.69% or 0.27 points to trade at 39.32 at the close. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 0.69% or 1.16 points to end at 169.88 and JPMorgan Chase&Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.60% or 0.77 points to 130.06 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 4.77% or 4.30 points to trade at 85.78 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 2.79% or 2.96 points to end at 102.99 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 1.86% or 6.02 points to 317.32.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which rose 1.51% to 31.52, Wells Fargo &Company (NYSE:WFC) which was up 1.51% to settle at 41.81 and Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) which gained 1.47% to close at 151.44.

The worst performers were Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 6.66% to 9.25 in late trade, Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which lost 6.01% to settle at 9.54 and CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 5.50% to 58.06 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Madrigal Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MDGL) which rose 268.07% to 234.83, Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ:AXLA) which was up 165.27% to settle at 0.43 and Soleno Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SLNO) which gained 103.86% to close at 1.85.

The worst performers were Cosmos Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:COSM) which was down 67.01% to 7.59 in late trade, Pingtan Marine Enterprise Ltd (NASDAQ:PME) which lost 11.72% to settle at 0.58 and Schmitt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:SMIT) which was down 44.88% to 0.46 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2224 to 875 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2710 fell and 1039 advanced, while 136 ended unchanged.

Shares in Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) fell to 5-year lows; falling 6.66% or 0.66 to 9.25. Shares in Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) fell to 52-week lows; falling 4.77% or 4.30 to 85.78. Shares in Madrigal Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MDGL) rose to 3-years highs; up 268.07% or 171.03 to 234.83. Shares in Schmitt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:SMIT) fell to all time lows; losing 44.88% or 0.37 to 0.46.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.93% to 22.41.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.21% or 3.75 to $1,796.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.87% or 1.39 to hit $75.85 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.45% or 1.15 to trade at $80.19 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.22% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 136.95.

The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 104.33.
