U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.11%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.11%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.48%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 3.12% or 8.22 points to trade at 271.32 at the close. Meanwhile, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.70% or 0.75 points to end at 28.55 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.45% or 4.09 points to 171.12 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which fell 0.56% or 0.96 points to trade at 171.01 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.37% or 0.40 points to end at 107.66 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 0.19% or 0.48 points to 248.15.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which rose 9.85% to 215.94, Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was up 4.99% to settle at 14.93 and Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which gained 4.80% to close at 122.26.

The worst performers were Fidelity National Information Services Inc (NYSE:FIS) which was down 12.48% to 66.02 in late trade, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which lost 4.02% to settle at 86.85 and Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which was down 3.09% to 62.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Vallon Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:VLON) which rose 90.27% to 0.88, China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc (NASDAQ:CJJD) which was up 43.43% to settle at 7.10 and Contextlogic Inc (NASDAQ:WISH) which gained 37.34% to close at 0.88.

The worst performers were Frequency Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FREQ) which was down 80.54% to 0.76 in late trade, Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:SRNE) which lost 72.64% to settle at 0.26 and G1 Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GTHX) which was down 53.16% to 3.34 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2227 to 811 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2235 rose and 1450 declined, while 161 ended unchanged.

Shares in Frequency Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FREQ) fell to all time lows; falling 80.54% or 3.17 to 0.76. Shares in Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:SRNE) fell to all time lows; losing 72.64% or 0.68 to 0.26. Shares in G1 Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GTHX) fell to all time lows; losing 53.16% or 3.79 to 3.34.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.93% to 20.34.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.51% or 9.60 to $1,864.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.63% or 0.50 to hit $79.22 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.56% or 0.48 to trade at $85.91 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.75% to 132.40.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 103.20.
