U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.65%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Utilities sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.65%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.81%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.94%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 6.91% or 5.84 points to trade at 90.34 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.78% or 1.50 points to end at 193.33 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 0.42% or 2.27 points to 539.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which fell 3.37% or 9.20 points to trade at 264.06 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.72% or 8.05 points to end at 287.87 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was down 2.62% or 0.55 points to 20.45.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Transdigm Group Incorporated (NYSE:TDG) which rose 8.70% to 973.07, Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) which was up 6.91% to settle at 90.34 and Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which gained 2.95% to close at 28.27.

The worst performers were Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BDX) which was down 9.25% to 232.24 in late trade, Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which lost 8.45% to settle at 44.51 and Axon Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ:AXON) which was down 6.05% to 215.70 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Intelligent Bio Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:INBS) which rose 92.51% to 0.44, Astra Space Inc (NASDAQ:ASTR) which was up 86.49% to settle at 1.38 and Janone Inc (NASDAQ:JAN) which gained 65.42% to close at 0.53.

The worst performers were Atara Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATRA) which was down 80.17% to 0.24 in late trade, Davis Commodities Ltd (NASDAQ:DTCK) which lost 70.83% to settle at 2.03 and Ikena Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:IKNA) which was down 67.80% to 1.33 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2125 to 780 and 55 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2535 fell and 921 advanced, while 104 ended unchanged.

Shares in Transdigm Group Incorporated (NYSE:TDG) rose to all time highs; rising 8.70% or 77.86 to 973.07. Shares in Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 8.45% or 4.11 to 44.51. Shares in Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) fell to 5-year lows; falling 2.62% or 0.55 to 20.45. Shares in Atara Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATRA) fell to all time lows; falling 80.17% or 0.97 to 0.24. Shares in Davis Commodities Ltd (NASDAQ:DTCK) fell to all time lows; falling 70.83% or 4.93 to 2.03. Shares in Ikena Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:IKNA) fell to all time lows; falling 67.80% or 2.80 to 1.33.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.81% to 15.29.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.29% or 5.65 to $1,963.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.25% or 0.19 to hit $75.52 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.38% or 0.30 to trade at $79.84 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.26% to 151.35.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 105.78.
