U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.24%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.24% to hit a new 3-months high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.29%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.47% or 1.43 points to trade at 98.50 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 1.40% or 3.07 points to end at 222.37 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 1.24% or 1.94 points to 158.71 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 2.81% or 2.67 points to trade at 92.50 at the close. Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.24% or 1.26 points to end at 100.17 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was down 0.99% or 1.77 points to 176.84.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 6.31% to 40.59, Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF) which was up 5.10% to settle at 30.89 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which gained 4.51% to close at 246.72.

The worst performers were WW Grainger Inc (NYSE:GWW) which was down 4.38% to 774.85 in late trade, GE HealthCare Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:GEHC) which lost 4.23% to settle at 68.13 and Arch Capital Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ACGL) which was down 2.93% to 84.45 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Redhill Biopharma Ltd (NASDAQ:RDHL) which rose 128.00% to 2.28, Icecure Medical Ltd (NASDAQ:ICCM) which was up 79.47% to settle at 1.35 and Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc (NASDAQ:WHLR) which gained 52.54% to close at 0.36.

The worst performers were Tharimmune Inc (NASDAQ:THAR) which was down 72.36% to 0.97 in late trade, SenesTech Inc (NASDAQ:SNES) which lost 49.73% to settle at 0.93 and ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ:SLRN) which was down 32.41% to 5.88 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1461 to 1424 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1860 fell and 1567 advanced, while 146 ended unchanged.

Shares in Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) fell to 52-week lows; falling 1.24% or 1.26 to 100.17. Shares in Tharimmune Inc (NASDAQ:THAR) fell to all time lows; losing 72.36% or 2.54 to 0.97. Shares in SenesTech Inc (NASDAQ:SNES) fell to all time lows; down 49.73% or 0.92 to 0.93. Shares in ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ:SLRN) fell to all time lows; falling 32.41% or 2.82 to 5.88.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was unchanged 0.00% to 12.69.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.43% or 28.80 to $2,041.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.08% or 1.56 to hit $76.42 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.87% or 1.49 to trade at $81.36 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.33% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.79% to 147.50.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 102.68.
