U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.10%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.54%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 5.44% or 5.37 points to trade at 104.09 at the close. Meanwhile, The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 1.41% or 3.11 points to end at 223.57 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.36% or 2.06 points to 153.95 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 4.44% or 2.01 points to trade at 43.23 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 3.89% or 11.45 points to end at 282.86 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was down 1.21% or 2.10 points to 171.13.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Freeport-McMoran Copper&Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which rose 7.61% to 43.43, 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which was up 5.44% to settle at 104.09 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which gained 5.27% to close at 158.68.

The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 14.21% to 128.42 in late trade, Fair Isaac Corporation (NYSE:FICO) which lost 6.13% to settle at 1,247.16 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 4.54% to 169.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were TRACON Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TCON) which rose 61.79% to 0.63, CXApp Inc (NASDAQ:CXAI) which was up 59.61% to settle at 3.24 and Vroom (NASDAQ:VRM) which gained 53.83% to close at 17.49.

The worst performers were Voxeljet Ag (NASDAQ:VJET) which was down 50.00% to 0.50 in late trade, Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ:LUNA) which lost 35.78% to settle at 4.02 and Solowin Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:SWIN) which was down 31.99% to 19.79 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1728 to 1148 and 72 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1735 fell and 1631 advanced, while 147 ended unchanged.

Shares in Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) rose to all time highs; gaining 5.27% or 7.95 to 158.68. Shares in The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) rose to all time highs; rising 1.41% or 3.11 to 223.57. Shares in Voxeljet Ag (NASDAQ:VJET) fell to all time lows; falling 50.00% or 0.50 to 0.50. Shares in Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ:LUNA) fell to 3-years lows; down 35.78% or 2.24 to 4.02.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.65% to 13.75.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.62% or 13.40 to $2,179.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.68% or 2.08 to hit $79.64 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 2.49% or 2.04 to trade at $83.96 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.22% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.07% to 147.79.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 102.43.
