U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.93%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Financials and Utilities sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.93%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.55%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 4.83% or 4.69 points to trade at 101.88 at the close. Meanwhile, Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 3.94% or 8.38 points to end at 221.19 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) was up 2.62% or 0.78 points to 30.57 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which fell 1.14% or 1.25 points to trade at 108.71 at the close. Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.55% or 0.88 points to end at 158.63 and Procter&Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.53% or 0.79 points to 148.07.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which rose 11.02% to 9.87, Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which was up 10.02% to settle at 90.99 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which gained 9.18% to close at 93.71.

The worst performers were VeriSign Inc (NASDAQ:VRSN) which was down 5.05% to 213.73 in late trade, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which lost 3.05% to settle at 439.35 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 2.13% to 137.56 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) which rose 307.41% to 16.50, Eloxx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ELOX) which was up 93.86% to settle at 7.58 and Adial Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ADIL) which gained 90.31% to close at 0.38.

The worst performers were SunCar Technology Group Inc (NASDAQ:SDA) which was down 35.50% to 14.01 in late trade, Prestige Wealth Inc (NASDAQ:PWM) which lost 24.92% to settle at 18.92 and Tattooed Chef Inc (NASDAQ:TTCF) which was down 24.76% to 0.16 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2244 to 710 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2211 rose and 1314 declined, while 140 ended unchanged.

Shares in Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) rose to 52-week highs; rising 10.02% or 8.29 to 90.99. Shares in Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) rose to 52-week highs; up 307.41% or 12.45 to 16.50. Shares in Prestige Wealth Inc (NASDAQ:PWM) fell to all time lows; losing 24.92% or 6.28 to 18.92. Shares in Tattooed Chef Inc (NASDAQ:TTCF) fell to all time lows; losing 24.76% or 0.05 to 0.16.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.53% to 14.84.

Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.32% or 6.15 to $1,937.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.52% or 1.84 to hit $74.83 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.19% or 1.70 to trade at $79.39 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.68% to 140.35.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 101.35.
