U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.02%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Industrials sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.02% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.56%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.49%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 5.55% or 15.37 points to trade at 292.39 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.86% or 4.71 points to end at 169.62 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 2.18% or 3.20 points to 150.18 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which fell 0.78% or 0.30 points to trade at 38.29 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.53% or 0.53 points to end at 99.90 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 0.15% or 0.27 points to 185.34.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which rose 19.13% to 251.73, Expeditors International of Washington Inc (NASDAQ:EXPD) which was up 9.06% to settle at 104.40 and Welltower Inc (NYSE:WELL) which gained 8.22% to close at 66.51.

The worst performers were Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which was down 13.68% to 93.57 in late trade, Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) which lost 6.25% to settle at 80.19 and International Flavors&Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 4.89% to 91.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Taskus Inc (NASDAQ:TASK) which rose 37.22% to 22.01, GrowGeneration Corp (NASDAQ:GRWG) which was up 35.05% to settle at 4.47 and Skywater Technology Inc (NASDAQ:SKYT) which gained 31.60% to close at 11.37.

The worst performers were Bioventus Inc (NASDAQ:BVS) which was down 57.51% to 3.00 in late trade, R1 RCM Inc (NASDAQ:RCM) which lost 49.76% to settle at 7.41 and Athersys Inc (NASDAQ:ATHX) which was down 43.36% to 1.28 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1830 to 1252 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1878 fell and 1804 advanced, while 207 ended unchanged.

Shares in Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) fell to 3-years lows; losing 13.68% or 14.83 to 93.57. Shares in Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) fell to 52-week lows; losing 6.25% or 5.35 to 80.19. Shares in Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) rose to all time highs; gaining 5.55% or 15.37 to 292.39. Shares in Bioventus Inc (NASDAQ:BVS) fell to all time lows; losing 57.51% or 4.06 to 3.00. Shares in R1 RCM Inc (NASDAQ:RCM) fell to 3-years lows; losing 49.76% or 7.34 to 7.41.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.89% to 25.54.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 2.15% or 36.20 to $1,716.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.83% or 2.60 to hit $89.19 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.40% or 2.35 to trade at $95.57 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.56% to 1.01, while USD/JPY fell 0.73% to 145.55.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.45% at 109.49.
