U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.12%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.12%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.90%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 4.31% or 6.35 points to trade at 153.53 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 3.14% or 4.45 points to end at 145.99 and JPMorgan Chase&Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 2.57% or 2.98 points to 118.84 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 2.08% or 0.55 points to trade at 25.87 at the close. Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 0.35% or 0.58 points to end at 166.01 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was down 0.32% or 0.29 points to 89.68.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which rose 11.28% to 8.09, Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) which was up 8.69% to settle at 431.84 and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which gained 8.57% to close at 14.31.

The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 3.71% to 134.09 in late trade, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which lost 2.88% to settle at 65.76 and DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was down 2.81% to 96.93 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were COMSovereign Holding Corp (NASDAQ:COMS) which rose 170.14% to 0.12, Akouos Inc (NASDAQ:AKUS) which was up 88.16% to settle at 13.19 and Helbiz Inc (NASDAQ:HLBZ) which gained 58.07% to close at 0.42.

The worst performers were Agrify Corp (NASDAQ:AGFY) which was down 58.60% to 4.43 in late trade, Cosmos Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:COSM) which lost 47.33% to settle at 0.08 and Salarius Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SLRX) which was down 45.18% to 2.74 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2299 to 820 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2446 rose and 1303 declined, while 247 ended unchanged.

Shares in Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) fell to 52-week lows; falling 2.88% or 1.95 to 65.76. Shares in Akouos Inc (NASDAQ:AKUS) rose to 52-week highs; rising 88.16% or 6.18 to 13.19. Shares in Cosmos Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:COSM) fell to 5-year lows; losing 47.33% or 0.07 to 0.08. Shares in Salarius Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SLRX) fell to all time lows; falling 45.18% or 2.26 to 2.74.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.77% to 30.50.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.43% or 7.20 to $1,656.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.33% or 1.97 to hit $82.56 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.44% or 1.32 to trade at $90.30 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.20% to 0.99, while USD/JPY rose 0.12% to 149.21.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 111.88.
