U.S. stocks higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.34%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Technology sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.34% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.86%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 3.72% or 9.38 points to trade at 261.32 at the close. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) added 2.97% or 1.66 points to end at 57.62 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 2.93% or 8.08 points to 283.61 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which fell 0.53% or 0.47 points to trade at 88.03 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.27% or 0.28 points to end at 101.76 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 0.05% or 0.08 points to 173.11.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were HCA Holdings Inc (NYSE:HCA) which rose 7.02% to 210.47, Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which was up 5.30% to settle at 207.83 and Regions Financial Corporation (NYSE:RF) which gained 5.28% to close at 20.55.

The worst performers were Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which was down 10.31% to 35.04 in late trade, Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) which lost 5.47% to settle at 83.76 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 3.86% to 56.53 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Applied Genetic (NASDAQ:AGTC) which rose 62.43% to 0.39, Vaxcyte Inc (NASDAQ:PCVX) which was up 60.35% to settle at 33.00 and Mullen Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:MULN) which gained 32.94% to close at 0.50.

The worst performers were Tricida Inc (NASDAQ:TCDA) which was down 94.48% to 0.60 in late trade, Alfi Inc (NASDAQ:ALF) which lost 54.32% to settle at 0.11 and Huadi International Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HUDI) which was down 43.99% to 33.00 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1755 to 1346 and 116 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1942 rose and 1821 declined, while 217 ended unchanged.

Shares in Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) rose to all time highs; rising 3.72% or 9.38 to 261.32. Shares in Tricida Inc (NASDAQ:TCDA) fell to all time lows; down 94.48% or 10.28 to 0.60. Shares in Vaxcyte Inc (NASDAQ:PCVX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 60.35% or 12.42 to 33.00. Shares in Alfi Inc (NASDAQ:ALF) fell to all time lows; losing 54.32% or 0.13 to 0.11.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.54% to 29.85.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.16% or 2.60 to $1,653.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.26% or 0.22 to hit $84.83 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.11 to trade at $91.45 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 0.99, while USD/JPY rose 0.97% to 149.07.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 111.93.
