U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.03%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.12%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.88% or 1.49 points to trade at 80.81 at the close. Meanwhile, Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.40% or 1.43 points to end at 103.60 and Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.06% or 1.65 points to 157.17 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which fell 4.83% or 2.66 points to trade at 52.38 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.43% or 1.24 points to end at 49.87 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was down 1.57% or 4.15 points to 260.88.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) which rose 8.00% to 97.73, MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which was up 5.78% to settle at 225.61 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which gained 4.12% to close at 5.18.

The worst performers were Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which was down 6.29% to 59.06 in late trade, Mondelez International Inc (NASDAQ:MDLZ) which lost 5.26% to settle at 65.07 and Clorox Co (NYSE:CLX) which was down 5.23% to 124.94 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Orchard Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:ORTX) which rose 97.40% to 15.95, Mirati Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MRTX) which was up 45.44% to settle at 62.38 and SP Plus Corp (NASDAQ:SP) which gained 44.65% to close at 51.22.

The worst performers were VS Media Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:VSME) which was down 51.18% to 2.27 in late trade, Gaucho Group Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VINO) which lost 39.82% to settle at 1.33 and Cambium Networks Corp (NASDAQ:CMBM) which was down 36.24% to 5.05 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1554 to 1371 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1733 fell and 1714 advanced, while 142 ended unchanged.

Shares in Clorox Co (NYSE:CLX) fell to 52-week lows; down 5.23% or 6.89 to 124.94. Shares in Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) fell to 52-week lows; falling 4.83% or 2.66 to 52.38. Shares in Orchard Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:ORTX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 97.40% or 7.87 to 15.95. Shares in VS Media Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:VSME) fell to all time lows; down 51.18% or 2.38 to 2.27. Shares in Gaucho Group Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VINO) fell to all time lows; down 39.82% or 0.88 to 1.33. Shares in SP Plus Corp (NASDAQ:SP) rose to all time highs; rising 44.65% or 15.81 to 51.22. Shares in Cambium Networks Corp (NASDAQ:CMBM) fell to 3-years lows; falling 36.24% or 2.87 to 5.05.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.48% to 18.49.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.06% or 1.15 to $1,833.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.17% or 1.83 to hit $82.39 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 2.00% or 1.72 to trade at $84.09 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.43% to 148.49.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.41% at 106.09.
