U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.45%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Oil&Gas, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.45% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.90%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 1.53% or 3.48 points to trade at 231.14 at the close. Meanwhile, Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.50% or 4.08 points to end at 275.62 and Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.49% or 2.46 points to 167.54 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 3.62% or 5.42 points to trade at 144.36 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.53% or 4.07 points to end at 156.55 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 2.30% or 2.55 points to 108.22.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which rose 3.44% to 55.34, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 3.11% to settle at 43.72 and Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which gained 2.89% to close at 141.92.

The worst performers were FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) which was down 21.37% to 161.08 in late trade, WestRock Co (NYSE:WRK) which lost 11.48% to settle at 34.15 and International Paper (NYSE:IP) which was down 11.21% to 35.23 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Panbela Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PBLA) which rose 53.06% to 0.58, Applied Opt (NASDAQ:AAOI) which was up 50.40% to settle at 3.76 and Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ:AXLA) which gained 29.57% to close at 2.41.

The worst performers were Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which was down 58.52% to 4.31 in late trade, Esports Entertainment Group Inc (NASDAQ:GMBL) which lost 46.15% to settle at 0.17 and Shuttle Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SHPH) which was down 45.94% to 8.99 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2292 to 813 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2608 fell and 1164 advanced, while 194 ended unchanged.

Shares in FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) fell to 52-week lows; down 21.37% or 43.79 to 161.08. Shares in WestRock Co (NYSE:WRK) fell to 52-week lows; losing 11.48% or 4.43 to 34.15. Shares in International Paper (NYSE:IP) fell to 52-week lows; falling 11.21% or 4.45 to 35.23. Shares in Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) fell to all time lows; losing 58.52% or 6.08 to 4.31. Shares in Esports Entertainment Group Inc (NASDAQ:GMBL) fell to 5-year lows; falling 46.15% or 0.15 to 0.17. Shares in Shuttle Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SHPH) fell to all time lows; losing 45.94% or 7.64 to 8.99.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.11% to 26.30.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.38% or 6.35 to $1,683.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.29% or 0.25 to hit $85.35 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.81% or 0.74 to trade at $91.58 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.10% to 1.00, while USD/JPY fell 0.40% to 142.95.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 109.43.
