
Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.67%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.55%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.29% or 1.23 points to trade at 54.93 at the close. Meanwhile, International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 1.35% or 1.91 points to end at 142.98 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 1.16% or 3.39 points to 295.14 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON), which fell 5.69% or 11.85 points to trade at 196.41 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.49% or 4.18 points to end at 163.57 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 2.32% or 0.80 points to 33.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which rose 13.38% to 385.31, Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which was up 11.92% to settle at 76.55 and Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which gained 9.28% to close at 701.95.
The worst performers were eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) which was down 10.53% to 43.66 in late trade, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which lost 9.81% to settle at 1,882.98 and Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was down 9.78% to 82.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Femasys Inc (NASDAQ:FEMY) which rose 130.77% to 0.84, UroGen Pharma Ltd (NASDAQ:URGN) which was up 98.56% to settle at 17.89 and Greenbrook TMS Inc (NASDAQ:GBNH) which gained 90.75% to close at 0.50.
The worst performers were Mersana Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MRSN) which was down 72.63% to 1.07 in late trade, Yellow Corp (NASDAQ:YELL) which lost 44.12% to settle at 0.57 and ABVC Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABVC) which was down 41.73% to 3.10 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2244 to 732 and 63 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2543 fell and 969 advanced, while 121 ended unchanged.
Shares in Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) rose to 52-week highs; rising 13.38% or 45.46 to 385.31. Shares in Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) rose to 52-week highs; up 11.92% or 8.15 to 76.55. Shares in Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) rose to 52-week highs; up 9.28% or 59.58 to 701.95. Shares in Mersana Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MRSN) fell to all time lows; falling 72.63% or 2.84 to 1.07. Shares in UroGen Pharma Ltd (NASDAQ:URGN) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 98.56% or 8.88 to 17.89. Shares in Yellow Corp (NASDAQ:YELL) fell to all time lows; losing 44.12% or 0.45 to 0.57. Shares in ABVC Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABVC) fell to all time lows; falling 41.73% or 2.22 to 3.10.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.25% to 14.41.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.35% or 26.65 to $1,943.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.37% or 1.08 to hit $79.86 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.08% or 0.89 to trade at $83.45 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.99% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.51% to 139.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.91% at 101.55.
