U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.86%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Oil&Gas sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.86% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.49%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.34% or 0.71 points to trade at 31.24 at the close. Meanwhile, Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 1.13% or 2.58 points to end at 231.89 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 0.68% or 0.36 points to 53.36 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 3.38% or 3.41 points to trade at 97.45 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.50% or 7.33 points to end at 285.75 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was down 2.43% or 5.24 points to 210.40.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ball Corporation (NYSE:BALL) which rose 13.38% to 59.25, Fleetcor Technologies Inc (NYSE:FLT) which was up 7.92% to settle at 223.76 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which gained 7.16% to close at 71.88.

The worst performers were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 28.35% to 16.40 in late trade, PENN Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) which lost 13.65% to settle at 26.00 and Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) which was down 12.23% to 31.23 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Qurate Retail Inc Series B (NASDAQ:QRTEB) which rose 82.32% to 7.17, Soligenix Inc (NASDAQ:SNGX) which was up 60.56% to settle at 2.28 and Inseego Corp (NASDAQ:INSG) which gained 52.66% to close at 0.82.

The worst performers were TOP Financial Group Ltd (NASDAQ:TOP) which was down 79.39% to 17.48 in late trade, PacWest Bancorp (NASDAQ:PACW) which lost 50.62% to settle at 3.17 and Sensus Healthcare Inc (NASDAQ:SRTS) which was down 44.38% to 2.72 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2009 to 950 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2113 fell and 1434 advanced, while 144 ended unchanged.

Shares in PENN Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) fell to 52-week lows; falling 13.65% or 4.11 to 26.00. Shares in Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 12.23% or 4.35 to 31.23. Shares in PacWest Bancorp (NASDAQ:PACW) fell to all time lows; falling 50.62% or 3.25 to 3.17. Shares in Sensus Healthcare Inc (NASDAQ:SRTS) fell to 52-week lows; losing 44.38% or 2.17 to 2.72.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.54% to 20.09 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.08% or 22.05 to $2,059.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.10% or 0.07 to hit $68.53 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.10% or 0.07 to trade at $72.40 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 134.16.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 101.19.
