U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.01%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.01% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.95%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 1.57% or 2.42 points to trade at 156.90 at the close. Meanwhile, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.73% or 1.06 points to end at 145.94 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was down 0.10% or 0.12 points to 116.52 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which fell 4.42% or 4.74 points to trade at 102.47 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.26% or 4.12 points to end at 177.99 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 2.19% or 6.15 points to 274.27.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 2.90% to 67.80, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 2.65% to settle at 107.44 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which gained 2.09% to close at 104.63.

The worst performers were Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which was down 12.32% to 13.09 in late trade, Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which lost 9.81% to settle at 50.67 and Generac Holdlings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 7.00% to 183.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sobr Safe Inc (NASDAQ:SOBR) which rose 234.98% to 3.05, Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) which was up 60.58% to settle at 2.20 and Neurobo Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NRBO) which gained 42.40% to close at 20.79.

The worst performers were Virios Therapeutics Llc (NASDAQ:VIRI) which was down 75.50% to 0.49 in late trade, Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) which lost 67.24% to settle at 2.29 and Integrated Media Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:IMTE) which was down 46.07% to 1.03 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2600 to 542 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2711 fell and 1115 advanced, while 193 ended unchanged.

Shares in Generac Holdlings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) fell to 52-week lows; falling 7.00% or 13.80 to 183.48. Shares in Virios Therapeutics Llc (NASDAQ:VIRI) fell to all time lows; falling 75.50% or 1.51 to 0.49. Shares in Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 60.58% or 0.83 to 2.20. Shares in Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) fell to all time lows; falling 67.24% or 4.70 to 2.29. Shares in Integrated Media Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:IMTE) fell to all time lows; losing 46.07% or 0.88 to 1.03.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.43% to 27.16.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.29% or 4.80 to $1,673.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.19% or 1.02 to hit $84.34 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.14% or 1.05 to trade at $90.95 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.49% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 0.35% to 143.71.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 109.90.
