U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.35%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.35%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.40%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 0.16% or 0.25 points to trade at 160.69 at the close. Meanwhile, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.12% or 0.07 points to end at 59.50 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was down 0.22% or 0.13 points to 59.86 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which fell 3.48% or 10.60 points to trade at 294.14 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.84% or 2.65 points to end at 90.54 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was down 2.81% or 6.34 points to 219.59.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Conagra Brands Inc (NYSE:CAG) which rose 5.44% to 30.64, MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which was up 4.58% to settle at 224.79 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 3.57% to close at 86.18.

The worst performers were Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) which was down 19.33% to 81.58 in late trade, Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which lost 8.51% to settle at 12.37 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 8.26% to 165.83 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Candel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CADL) which rose 280.95% to 6.40, TC BioPharm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:TCBP) which was up 50.00% to settle at 1.95 and HWH International Inc (NASDAQ:HWH) which gained 46.50% to close at 2.30.

The worst performers were Effector Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:EFTR) which was down 82.03% to 2.96 in late trade, Keyarch Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:KYCH) which lost 54.80% to settle at 4.10 and Jiuzi Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:JZXN) which was down 40.94% to 0.88 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 0 to 0; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 0 fell and 0 advanced.

Shares in Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) fell to 52-week lows; down 19.33% or 19.55 to 81.58. Shares in Candel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CADL) rose to 52-week highs; up 280.95% or 4.72 to 6.40. Shares in Effector Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:EFTR) fell to all time lows; losing 82.03% or 13.51 to 2.96. Shares in Keyarch Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:KYCH) fell to all time lows; losing 54.80% or 4.97 to 4.10.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.92% to 16.50 a new 3-months high.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.04% or 0.85 to $2,307.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.13% or 0.11 to hit $86.48 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.10% or 0.09 to trade at $90.74 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 151.38.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 104.04.
