U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.45%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil&Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.45%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.54%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.58%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 0.88% or 0.95 points to trade at 108.45 at the close. Meanwhile, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.29% or 0.44 points to end at 153.51 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 0.23% or 0.35 points to 153.70 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 3.66% or 6.53 points to trade at 171.83 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 3.41% or 4.40 points to end at 124.64 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 3.22% or 3.18 points to 95.69.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which rose 13.32% to 46.91, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 4.36% to settle at 78.20 and Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which gained 1.98% to close at 457.24.

The worst performers were VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 5.62% to 32.41 in late trade, Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which lost 5.48% to settle at 5.52 and NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:NXPI) which was down 4.97% to 164.10 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Secoo Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:SECO) which rose 754.55% to 2.35, NanoVibronix Inc (NASDAQ:NAOV) which was up 144.27% to settle at 0.63 and Taboola (NASDAQ:TBLA) which gained 43.48% to close at 2.64.

The worst performers were CinCor Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:CINC) which was down 46.81% to 14.11 in late trade, Troika Media Group Inc (NASDAQ:TRKA) which lost 30.90% to settle at 0.16 and TC BioPharm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:TCBP) which was down 28.17% to 4.82 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2425 to 689 and 92 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2760 fell and 1057 advanced, while 171 ended unchanged.

Shares in Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) fell to 5-year lows; falling 5.48% or 0.32 to 5.52. Shares in Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) rose to all time highs; up 1.98% or 8.89 to 457.24. Shares in Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) rose to all time highs; gaining 0.88% or 0.95 to 108.45. Shares in Secoo Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:SECO) rose to 52-week highs; up 754.55% or 2.08 to 2.35. Shares in Troika Media Group Inc (NASDAQ:TRKA) fell to all time lows; losing 30.90% or 0.07 to 0.16. Shares in TC BioPharm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:TCBP) fell to all time lows; down 28.17% or 1.89 to 4.82.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.29% to 22.20.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.82% or 14.35 to $1,739.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.45% or 0.34 to hit $76.62 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.48% or 0.40 to trade at $83.31 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.53% to 1.03, while USD/JPY fell 0.14% to 138.90.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.66% at 106.62.
