U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.54%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.54%, while the S&P 500 index fell 2.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.84%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.11% or 1.69 points to trade at 154.61 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 0.49% or 0.88 points to end at 180.06 and Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was down 0.09% or 0.08 points to 86.70 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 6.04% or 8.06 points to trade at 125.38 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 4.97% or 1.65 points to end at 31.55 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was down 4.91% or 7.36 points to 142.48.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Everest Re Group Ltd (NYSE:RE) which rose 3.07% to 267.41, STERIS plc (NYSE:STE) which was up 2.76% to settle at 167.29 and W. R. Berkley Corp (NYSE:WRB) which gained 2.73% to close at 65.18.

The worst performers were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 24.55% to 65.20 in late trade, SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which lost 8.27% to settle at 235.56 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 7.91% to 43.64 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Senti Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SNTI) which rose 50.71% to 2.11, Avalon Globocare Corp (NASDAQ:AVCO) which was up 25.85% to settle at 0.70 and TuanChe ADR (NASDAQ:TC) which gained 25.31% to close at 3.07.

The worst performers were Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) which was down 54.82% to 33.95 in late trade, Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) which lost 49.25% to settle at 1.01 and Twin Vee Powercats Co (NASDAQ:VEEE) which was down 29.01% to 2.52 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2622 to 538 and 110 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2862 fell and 944 advanced, while 196 ended unchanged.

Shares in CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) fell to 52-week lows; down 24.55% or 21.22 to 65.20. Shares in Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) fell to 5-year lows; down 4.97% or 1.65 to 31.55. Shares in Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) fell to all time lows; falling 54.82% or 41.20 to 33.95.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.50% to 31.84.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.07% or 1.15 to $1,668.85 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.56% or 0.46 to hit $81.69 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.56% or 0.49 to trade at $87.56 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.72% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.21% to 144.46.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.37% at 112.09.
