U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.62%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Oil&Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.62% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.80%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 0.71% or 1.91 points to trade at 271.05 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.45% or 0.75 points to end at 166.93 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was down 0.34% or 0.78 points to 226.97 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which fell 6.53% or 10.12 points to trade at 144.77 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 5.37% or 7.45 points to end at 131.26 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was down 3.70% or 6.31 points to 164.24.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Generac Holdlings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which rose 3.24% to 176.63, Domino’s Pizza Inc (NYSE:DPZ) which was up 3.10% to settle at 330.06 and IDEXX Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:IDXX) which gained 2.49% to close at 334.20.

The worst performers were APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was down 11.43% to 32.87 in late trade, Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which lost 10.94% to settle at 21.90 and DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which was down 9.33% to 23.84 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Golden Sun Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GSUN) which rose 92.05% to 52.89, Kiromic Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:KRBP) which was up 46.43% to settle at 0.38 and Athersys Inc (NASDAQ:ATHX) which gained 39.32% to close at 1.63.

The worst performers were Ucommune International Ltd (NASDAQ:UK) which was down 41.29% to 3.00 in late trade, Color Star Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CSCW) which lost 33.83% to settle at 0.04 and Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SPPI) which was down 32.65% to 0.43 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2843 to 358 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 3033 fell and 788 advanced, while 196 ended unchanged.

Shares in DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) fell to 52-week lows; losing 9.33% or 2.45 to 23.84. Shares in Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) fell to 52-week lows; losing 3.70% or 6.31 to 164.24. Shares in Color Star Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CSCW) fell to all time lows; down 33.83% or 0.02 to 0.04. Shares in Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SPPI) fell to all time lows; falling 32.65% or 0.21 to 0.43.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.40% to 29.92 a new 3-months high.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.76% or 29.60 to $1,651.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 5.21% or 4.35 to hit $79.14 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 4.33% or 3.92 to trade at $86.54 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 1.47% to 0.97, while USD/JPY rose 0.68% to 143.32.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.50% at 112.77.
