U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.11%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil&Gas and Utilities sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.11%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.38%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.16% or 0.83 points to trade at 39.24 at the close. Meanwhile, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.36% or 3.27 points to end at 243.14 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.27% or 2.25 points to 179.65 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 1.84% or 1.62 points to trade at 86.39 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.39% or 1.83 points to end at 130.03 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was down 1.03% or 3.57 points to 341.94.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 4.47% to 84.33, VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was up 4.16% to settle at 27.16 and Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which gained 4.16% to close at 48.45.

The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 11.41% to 109.10 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 9.50% to settle at 180.17 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 7.14% to 141.21 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Elys Game Technology Corp (NASDAQ:ELYS) which rose 111.91% to 0.37, Lightjump Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:LJAQ) which was up 98.95% to settle at 19.00 and Quotient Ltd (NASDAQ:QTNT) which gained 94.74% to close at 0.37.

The worst performers were Tuesday Morning Corp (NASDAQ:TUEM) which was down 46.12% to 0.83 in late trade, Mingzhu Logistics Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:YGMZ) which lost 44.57% to settle at 0.97 and Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) which was down 36.45% to 0.68 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1694 to 1396 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2533 fell and 1238 advanced, while 101 ended unchanged.

Shares in Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 11.41% or 14.05 to 109.10. Shares in Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 1.36% or 3.27 to 243.14. Shares in Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) fell to 52-week lows; down 1.39% or 1.83 to 130.03. Shares in Tuesday Morning Corp (NASDAQ:TUEM) fell to all time lows; down 46.12% or 0.71 to 0.83. Shares in Lightjump Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:LJAQ) rose to all time highs; rising 98.95% or 9.45 to 19.00. Shares in Mingzhu Logistics Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:YGMZ) fell to all time lows; falling 44.57% or 0.78 to 0.97. Shares in Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) fell to all time lows; down 36.45% or 0.39 to 0.68.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.74% to 21.65.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.98% or 17.60 to $1,821.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.16% or 0.13 to hit $79.69 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.41% or 0.35 to trade at $84.85 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.49% to 133.51.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 103.89.
