U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.14%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Oil&Gas, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.14% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.03%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.60% or 1.71 points to trade at 108.84 at the close. Meanwhile, 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 0.89% or 0.97 points to end at 109.71 and Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.78% or 0.84 points to 108.82 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which fell 1.39% or 2.11 points to trade at 149.80 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 0.86% or 0.48 points to end at 55.23 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 0.73% or 0.37 points to 50.39.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which rose 2.57% to 36.73, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was up 1.84% to settle at 148.76 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which gained 1.74% to close at 11.69.

The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 3.16% to 253.18 in late trade, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which lost 2.88% to settle at 36.10 and Hess Corporation (NYSE:HES) which was down 2.58% to 144.74 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nova Lifestyle I (NASDAQ:NVFY) which rose 203.23% to 4.70, Sidus Space Inc (NASDAQ:SIDU) which was up 163.16% to settle at 11.50 and Cingulate Inc (NASDAQ:CING) which gained 146.12% to close at 9.82.

The worst performers were Bluejay Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ:BJDX) which was down 34.17% to 1.19 in late trade, Meihua International Medical Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:MHUA) which lost 33.95% to settle at 1.79 and Riskon International Inc (NASDAQ:ROI) which was down 33.72% to 0.28 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1519 to 1363 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1766 fell and 1648 advanced, while 126 ended unchanged.

Shares in Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) rose to 52-week highs; up 1.84% or 2.69 to 148.76. Shares in Bluejay Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ:BJDX) fell to all time lows; losing 34.17% or 0.62 to 1.19.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.32% to 12.47.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.80% or 16.80 to $2,076.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.87% or 2.13 to hit $71.98 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.68% or 2.13 to trade at $77.41 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 1.11, while USD/JPY fell 0.32% to 141.37.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 100.92.
