U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.16%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Friday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Utilities sectors led shares higher while losses in the Oil&Gas, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.16% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.28%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 1.40% or 4.00 points to trade at 289.18 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.84% or 1.34 points to end at 161.79 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.81% or 1.49 points to 185.70 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 1.00% or 1.85 points to trade at 182.52 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 0.60% or 1.33 points to end at 220.97 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 0.48% or 0.75 points to 154.68.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Palo Alto Networks Inc (NASDAQ:PANW) which rose 5.33% to 282.09, Dominion Energy Inc (NYSE:D) which was up 4.96% to settle at 47.86 and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which gained 4.76% to close at 73.98.

The worst performers were Booking Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BKNG) which was down 10.15% to 3,505.96 in late trade, Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which lost 9.94% to settle at 8.61 and Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ:PODD) which was down 6.56% to 184.21 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocean Biomedical Inc (NASDAQ:OCEA) which rose 185.77% to 1.57, Telesis Bio Inc (NASDAQ:TBIO) which was up 72.34% to settle at 0.78 and AXT Inc (NASDAQ:AXTI) which gained 69.30% to close at 3.86.

The worst performers were Pop Culture Group Co Ltd (NASDAQ:CPOP) which was down 43.50% to 3.74 in late trade, Greenbrook TMS Inc (NASDAQ:GBNH) which lost 40.69% to settle at 0.12 and Smith Micro Software Inc (NASDAQ:SMSI) which was down 40.51% to 0.49 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1729 to 1124 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1838 rose and 1582 declined, while 118 ended unchanged.

Shares in Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) fell to 5-year lows; falling 9.94% or 0.95 to 8.61. Shares in Greenbrook TMS Inc (NASDAQ:GBNH) fell to all time lows; down 40.69% or 0.08 to 0.12. Shares in Smith Micro Software Inc (NASDAQ:SMSI) fell to 5-year lows; losing 40.51% or 0.33 to 0.49.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.43% to 13.75.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.72% or 14.65 to $2,045.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.60% or 2.04 to hit $76.57 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.35% or 1.97 to trade at $81.70 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 150.49.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.00% at 103.87.
