U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.46%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.46%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.57%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.30% or 2.80 points to trade at 218.45 at the close. Meanwhile, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.83% or 1.04 points to end at 126.19 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.77% or 1.31 points to 172.32 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which fell 1.79% or 3.35 points to trade at 184.25 at the close. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 1.67% or 1.01 points to end at 59.59 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 1.58% or 5.12 points to 318.41.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which rose 11.56% to 125.55, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 7.51% to settle at 209.25 and Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which gained 7.37% to close at 121.10.

The worst performers were Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which was down 5.50% to 95.17 in late trade, Marsh&McLennan Companies Inc (NYSE:MMC) which lost 4.03% to settle at 166.99 and Arthur J Gallagher&Co (NYSE:AJG) which was down 3.58% to 188.24 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Amesite Operating Co (NASDAQ:AMST) which rose 81.62% to 0.51, Boxlight Corp Class A (NASDAQ:BOXL) which was up 39.47% to settle at 0.56 and United Insurance Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:UIHC) which gained 37.27% to close at 1.51.

The worst performers were Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 44.85% to 0.91 in late trade, Mobiquity Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:MOBQ) which lost 32.77% to settle at 0.35 and Pathfinder Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MVLA) which was down 31.61% to 4.24 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1579 to 1456 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1969 fell and 1692 advanced, while 176 ended unchanged.

Shares in Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) fell to 5-year lows; losing 44.85% or 0.74 to 0.91. Shares in Mobiquity Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:MOBQ) fell to all time lows; losing 32.77% or 0.17 to 0.35. Shares in Pathfinder Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MVLA) fell to all time lows; losing 31.61% or 1.96 to 4.24.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.03% to 18.91.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.12% or 2.25 to $1,865.75 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.26% or 1.01 to hit $79.13 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.14% or 0.99 to trade at $85.62 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.49% to 133.04.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 103.14.
